Thanksgiving 2013
“Enter his gates with
thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his
name.”
As we pass Thanksgiving, I look back on
yesterday and remain in thought as to how many people, myself included stopped
for a minute to think and say a simple thank you. I know I didn’t until I went
to bed, therefore, in my nightly prayers. It was a simple task, and we forget.
We are only human as the saying goes, so we are expected to forget, be mean,
and completely ignore our responsibility to be a good person or at least try.
I went to the store the other night. I was
stopped about 3 yards from the door, engine was running and I was waiting on my
mother to come out. My daughter was in the backseat. I was not blocking anyone
in and was conscious and still looking around making sure I was ok to be there.
Out of nowhere a man came up in front of my car, banged both fists on my hood
and proceeded to use some choice words I would rather not repeat rather loudly.
I calmly looked at him and merely whispered “Merry Christmas”. It didn’t make a
difference as my engine was running and windows were up. My daughter was
spooked to say the least and upset. I told my mother what had happened and she
of course used some other choice words also.
Now as I look back on that incident, I have
to ask….isn’t this the season for good will toward man? Are we not supposed to
dig deeper within ourselves and search for that something special, the something
that comes from our soul and not our human side? Isn’t the attitudes I
mentioned previously the reason the world is so angry and in wars? Whether or
not we agree on this one concept, I am disheartened that in this season we are
still so busy being angry and mean towards others. Not even in this season do
we take a break from that frame of mind. Ironically enough, if those same
people were on the receiving end of such vile and mean attitudes, I’m willing
to bet they would be the first to complain.
So, in this season as we start with
Thanksgiving, remember to give it. Say thank you, be kinder to people…try to
make a change for the better and let’s start with ourselves. Look in the mirror
and be honest with yourself. No one else needs to know. You won’t be
embarrassed because your friends will think you’re not man enough or your
girlfriends will think your perfection is flawed. No one needs to know but you
and the person staring back in the mirror.
Sadly enough it seems as though the
holidays and their meaning have completely gotten out of hand and much colder
as the years passed. Nothing was open Thanksgiving Day in years passed and
people were kinder to each other, a lot more smiles as you pass them on the
street. Yesterday, everything was open, all day….and why…..to suit our
materialistic need to spend money for a gift for someone we may or may not
truly care for.
I can only pray that Christmas is not as
money bound and hateful as Thanksgiving seemed to be.
