Folly
I had a rather idiotic conversation with a client while working this
past day. It blew my mind away in its inanity that I feel compelled to share. I
was speaking with a gentleman regarding some problems I was consulting him on.
While researching for a proper solution, this person began to bring up
religion. I don’t know why as it was never discussed in any previous
conversations. I let it go and didn’t question figuring I’d let him drone on
and on until bored. That way I can get on with the research I was doing for
him. Selfish and wrong as that may be, but I never claimed perfection. Most of
it I was able to drown out, however, he brought up a point which I could not
ignore. He said and I quote…”I don’t understand these Christians who believe in
a 5000 year old fairytale”. I couldn’t help but smile at this, but I admit I
was a bit intrigued. So I listened on. Apparently, anyone who falls into that
category is stupid and living life in a fairytale awaiting the ending happily
because there is an ever after life. Then he proceeds to tell me that those who
do not believe in the theory of evolution have IQ’s much lower than the
“scientific” type. Apparently, science has proven everything we need to know
and due to the fact we have 5 fingers, like the ape science is therefore
irrefutable. I won’t lie, I was amused and very much so at this point that I
found myself egging him on to continue on this mission of verbal folly. So he
did. Mind you, I think I have a bit of intelligence and wit and typically enjoy
the good debate, when it makes sense and is based on truth and facts…..but this
client, well let’s say he was short in that department. He came to my table
unarmored for a battle of wits and intelligence. The entire point he was trying
to debate was based on a repetitive version of all I wrote above, just worded
differently. Semantics does not prove a point.
So after his ingenious speech was over, I found myself asking him one
question. I went into saying I wasn’t for or against either point, however,
both sides hold no tangible prove. One side is based on science, which yes I
agree does go back some odd amount of years, but does it tell a story so
convincingly that you are hard pressed to find reasonable doubt? On the other
hand, creation requires blind faith. That is a concept which even the strongest
Christians battle with constantly. There is no reasonable proof on either side.
One requires being ok with partial information while the other is based on
blind faith. The inept man’s response was “well, but still evolution is the
smart man’s road”. I stared blankly at him waiting for more, something I could
at least hold onto…….but it wasn’t coming. So, I let out a sigh, smiled and
moved on. Unarmed, he came unarmed in one of the hottest topics plaguing the
human race today.
I am not throwing my opinion or belief on anyone, as I am a firm
believer that “to each his own” in such a personal topic; however, if you are
going to debate battle, have something more concrete than you’re hatred towards
your friends and family because they don’t agree with your choice of lifestyle
and educate yourself to at least come to the table poised and armed with facts
and not imbecile, feet stomping child-like arguments.
Sigh. The foolishness of some knows no bounds. I am shocked that people
with such a closed mindset, unwilling to learn and listen actually survived
childhood. I don’t want to be mean, but let’s be honest some people you come
across leave you refreshed and intrigued in new things or viewpoints you may
not have thought of, others….well leave us shocked in other ways.

Silence is your best friend when you dont know much about a topic. I practice that wisely.
Whether or not he listened to others is of no consequence, but coming to the table unarmed is plain silly.
I love the term window licker, will have to use.
